Like a furnace, a boiler can be either gas fired or oil fired. A boiler heats water to produce hot water or steam depending on the purpose.
In residential heating applications, a boiler is part of a radiant heating system to provide hot water to piping in the floor or walls.
An advantage of a properly installed radiant system is consistent warmth from your head to your toes as the floor is warmed from the hot water filled pipes which in turn naturally rises up, heating the entire room.
